Getting Started at the UCTC
Call the Counseling Center at 541-346-3227 or come by the front desk and schedule your first appointment. Our front desk staff will schedule a 10-15 minute Brief Phone Assessment for you with a therapist. These appointments are typically scheduled to occur within 1-2 business days, however depending on the demand it may be longer.
Students attending the UO Portland campus should contact the Portland State SHAC for services.
During your Brief Phone Assessment, the therapist will ask you some questions and help you decide on next steps. This could include scheduling a longer In-Person Assessment, referral to a campus or community resource, meeting with one of our therapy group leaders, or a combination of these.
Taking the Next Step
Once you have identified next steps, all that remains is to follow through with your plan. If your next step is an In-Person Assessment at the Counseling Center, please show up as scheduled. Your first visit with us will require some paperwork be completed. Please arrive early enough to allow 15 minutes to complete these forms. Please bring your student ID with you.
Congratulations on taking a step toward getting support!
All appointments are scheduled as soon as possible given each student’s availability, concerns, and resources. The Counseling Center is busiest at the end of each term and toward the end of the year, so scheduling may be more difficult at these times.

Note about referrals: Referrals to a community therapist might be appropriate if it seems a student would benefit from longer term therapy, the concerns presented require an expertise or treatment modality not available at the UCTC, or if there is a waitlist for ongoing sessions and a student’s needs are time sensitive. If a referral is indicated, therapists work closely with the student to identify resources or community therapists/treatment centers that would be a good match in regards to the needs and financial means of the student. Therapists gladly assist students with contacting community therapists/agencies to set up first appointments.
Note about joining groups: Groups require a group screening UNLESS they are noted as "drop in." If you are interested in a specific group, call the Counseling Center at 541-346-3227 and let the front desk know which group would like to join. You will be scheduled for a brief phone assessment. If you have any questions about our groups, please feel free to contact Dr. Asha Stephen, who oversees the group program, at 541-346-3227.
Missed Appointment Fee
There is a $25 missed appointment / late-cancellation fee. All appointments must be cancelled or rescheduled by 1 p.m. of the previous day (or by 1 p.m. on Friday for a Monday appointment), to avoid these charges. A missed appointment fee may also be incurred if arriving late results in a canceled or rescheduled appointment. Missed appointment and late-cancellation fees will be billed to the student’s UO account. The policy applies to in-person assessments, individual sessions, as well as mandated appointments.
